Why start with a screening test?
An intelligence test can provide very useful information, but not every curious, sensitive or academically able child has High Intellectual Potential. The screening first assesses whether the hypothesis is coherent enough to justify a WISC-V or WPPSI-IV assessment.
I look in particular at feeling different from peers, sensitivity, curiosity, perfectionism, memory, early development, school experience and relationships with other people.

Identifying High Intellectual Potential can change how a child is understood
A child with High Intellectual Potential may do very well at school, but they may also become bored, be extremely demanding of themselves, appear inconsistent or fail to express their abilities fully. When High Intellectual Potential is identified, certain reactions and differences often become much easier to understand.
The aim is not to give the child a flattering label. It is to understand how they function more accurately and determine whether their academic, cognitive or emotional needs require particular attention.

How is High Intellectual Potential confirmed afterwards?
The screening is a first step. Psychometric confirmation is based on an age-appropriate intelligence test: WPPSI-IV for younger children and WISC-V from age 6 to 16 years 11 months.
Frequently asked questions
My child is doing well at school. Is screening still useful?
Yes. Good school results do not rule out High Intellectual Potential, and some gifted children experience no particular academic difficulty.
My child has difficulties at school. Could they still have HIP?
Yes. School performance and intellectual ability are not the same thing. Other factors can affect academic performance.
Does the screening replace the WISC-V?
No. Its purpose is to estimate whether psychometric testing appears relevant.
What happens if the hypothesis appears unlikely?
The feedback explains why and may help you avoid arranging a test that does not appear to be a priority.
Unsure whether your child should take an IQ test?
The screening gives you a first answer before you make that decision. It may show that the hypothesis deserves to be tested with a WISC-V or WPPSI-IV, or help you explore another explanation instead.
